Two Poems by Jasmine Cook

by Jasmine Cook

Goodbye Innocence

Her innocence was taken much too early,

It shouldn’t have left so prematurely,

The child inside was gone in an instant,

The trust she once had was now nonexistent.

She was confused and didn’t understand,

She had said no to his awful demand.

She thought that he would always defend her,

How could he be such a dangerous offender?

He pinned her down on the bed,

And held her hands above her head,

She knew she would be better off dead,

But she was trapped dancing with the devil instead.

“Home is supposed to be my safe place,”

She thought as the tears ran down her face.

“God can you hear me? please answer my prayer,”

But nobody answered, because God wasn’t there.

The trust she once had, had turned obsolete,

Now all she saw was pain and deceit,

And as she held on tight to her sheet,

She knew she would never again be complete.

The world as she knew it was gone forever,

Life was no longer an easy endeavor.

She wouldn’t ever let anyone close,

Because evil stole her soul with a single dose.

I Can Take It

Dressers pushed over, books on the floor,

Glasses shattered, holes punched through the door,

She looks around at all the mess

And her heart tells her she deserves less.

He had to do this, there was no choice,

She had talked back and raised her voice.

If only she had just stayed quiet,

She wouldn’t have started this one-man riot.

In less than a second she’s pinned to the wall,

Compared to him, she’s just too small,

She won’t be able to win this fight,

But soon enough she’ll be alright.

He is screaming and he’s not done yet-

The star actor in his violent set,

“You’re a liar, confused, this is all your fault,”

All she can do is listen to his verbal assault.

She prays to God the situation diffuses,

And wonders how to hide the bruises,

A little make up? Long sleeve shirt?

And fake a smile to hide the hurt?

It would be okay, he would calm down,

She thinks to herself and straightens her crown.

She wouldn’t cry, no not now,

She couldn’t even remember how.

She could do this on her own,

Abuse is all she’s ever known,

Even if he breaks every bone,

Her smile only disappears when she’s alone.
